Anyone who’s worked with actor Kajol would know what she would be busy doing in between her film shoots. They all reveal in unison that when not poring over her dialogues, the actor would be engrossed in a book. “I’m an absolute books person, to the point of being called a bookworm,” agrees Kajol. Talking about her love for reading, the yum mum adds, “If there’s one thing I can’t do without, apart from my family of course, it’s got to be books.”

Kajol admits that post mommyhood her reading has considerbaly reduced, but she manages to squeeze in her book time. “Earlier it was impossible to catch me without a book in hand, but now I have to make an extra effort to take time out for reading,” shares the actor. As for her taste in books, Kajol adds, “I go for the light, frothy kind of novels, so even the romantic sorts work just great. I don’t enjoy the heavy kinds at all,” she reveals. “As a mother now, I do hope that my kids too enjoy reading as much as I do, but I do wish they read more of meaningful stuff as well,” smiles the actor.

The star along with his son Yug and sister-in-law Tanishaa was seen stepping out of his production office in Juhu. Devgn took to the wheel with his tot on his lap and drove to his home nearby.



We spotted Kajol waiting for him at the gate. She hopped in and they drove off to a health store near Prithvi Theatre. After over half an hour they emerged with their shopping bags and returned home.

Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan became very good friends on the sets of Bol Bachchan. While shooting, the duo also planned to go on a holiday together with their respective wives Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kajol.

A source told a leading daily that Ajay was talking to Abhishek and said, "When you, Aishwarya and Aaradhya travel to US towards mid July, Kajol, Nysa, Yug and I will join you. Ash and Kajol can bond, the kids can spend time together; while you and I sit down and have a drink together."

Abhishek Bachchan said yes to Ajay, but the actor also said that he is on a strict diet as he is working out for Dhoom 3.

The US plan was almost finalised, but it has been reported that there might be a change of destination and the Devgns might go to UK instead.

Recently Ajay Devgn was shooting at Mehboob Studio. And suddenly he fell ill on the set. Kajol, when she heard that, rushed from home to the studio. Within minutes she had taken charge of everything. She called a doctor. Poor woman was on tenterhooks till the doctor assured her that her husband was not in any danger. Only then did she sigh with relief.

While dancing on screen might be a task, her friend reveals off screen she's quite a riot. "Kajol loves item songs like Sheila ki jawani, Chikni Chameli, Jalebi bai, and goes all out dancing to them when she wants to have a good time. In the process she also ends up losing some weight. These days Halkat Jawani is her current favourite and she's been busy burning some calories to its tune."

Kajol is a must have for filmmaker Karan Johar in all his films because he feels his close friend is lucky for him. No wonder the actress features in a cameo in the song Disco deewane in Johar's forthcoming film Student of The Year (SOTY).

"Kajol is in the disco song and she has danced with the boys (Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan). Kajol's presence is very important for me. She has been there in every film of mine and she has always been lucky," the 40-year-old said here.

Having Kajol in his films is almost like tradition, he says, adding: "I don't like breaking tradition, I am a creature of habit."

Johar's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai also featured Kajol, who was also seen in his other projects like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan. She also made a cameo in the song Rock n roll soniye from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

The two male actors of SOTY were impressed with the actress when they shot with her for Disco deewane, a new age version of the famous 1980s hit by Nazia Hassan.

"It was great, she just came on the sets, picked up the steps in 10 to 15 minutes, while we had been learning the steps for seven days. We actually felt for the first time, the star power," Siddharth said.

"Basically when she was on the set no one saw us. We were like dancers, everyone was like 'Kajol ma'am is coming'," added Varun, son of filmmaker David Dhawan.

Kajol, known for her spontaneity on screen, feels Sridevi should open an acting school. “She knows everything about her job. It’s not only about standing in front of the camera, she knows how to hold her body and how to speak. Most actors don’t pay attention to these details,” she said in an earlier interview.

It was only when the Sri wave was ebbing that the Madhuri current rose. One can say that the era of female super-stardom ended after the two heroines. Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor come close, but the domination of a Sri or Madhuri is yet to be replicated.

Ajay Devgan and Kajol have always been the spiritual kinds. They often visit temples and other religious places to seek blessings. Recently too, they were in Jaipur to visit Kale Humanji’s temple but sadly couldn’t get his darshan. The Devgans had landed in Jaipur last Friday to offer their prayers at Kale Hanumanji temple. However, they couldn’t visit the shrine as they hadn’t planned it well and the temple was closed at the time they arrived. They have thus decided to return sometime later in the year to seek his blessings.

Kajol and her sister Tanisha disembarked at the Jaipur airport at around 5pm while Ajay was flying from Delhi to join them. Interestingly we hear that Kajol and Tanisha waited outside airport in a car for Ajay to arrive from Delhi. At the end of the trip, all of them took off to Mumbai in an early morning flight on Saturday. A source confirms that the couple is expected to be back in Jaipur sometime towards the end of September or may be in October to visit the temple again. Well, we hope next time you plan well and manage to offer your prayers to the deity of the city. As they say, you cannot meet God until and unless he wants to meet you. So, we hope next time he decides to give you a shot.

Driving social change for women - via stardom

There is the exploitative Bollywood of regressive themes, of course, but in a welcome development several stars are using their status and enormous clout to drive change in India.

Aamir Khan took up the issues with his debut TV show 'Satyamev Jayate' and now Amitabh is using the small screen to increase awareness. He is using the promos of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 6' as a platform to support the empowerment of women.

The megastar, who gets a rare chance to come face to face with the "real Indians" through his widely followed game show, says it's dismal to see the state of girls in small towns.

"In most places, they think it is a waste to spend money on girls' education. They even discriminate in giving girls proper food. It is sad," said the 69-year-old. "I believe naari hamaare desh ki 50 percent shakti hai (women form the country's 50 percent power)."

Just some months ago, Aamir blazed a trail when he brought up hard-hitting facts on female foeticide on the first episode of 'Satyamev Jayate'. And he just didn't talk, he went beyond the realm of television, met ministers and steered some action against those who practise the heinous crime of killing a girl child in the womb.

According to the 2011 Census, the rate at which the unborn female child is killed amounts to killing off a million girls a year. As a result, the ratio between girls and boys has been affected -- the 2011 census revealed that there were only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys.

"Female foeticide is a very serious issue. And if it continues the way it is, it will get worse," he said.

The buzz around her prompted actress Bipasha Basu, one among three sisters, to do something for the cause in Rajasthan.

"The rates in Rajasthan are alarmingly high. We have come leaps and beyond in terms of everything in life, but when we get to hear that people can kill their own child just on the basis of sex, the thinking seems just so small," Bipasha told us.

Independent and successful, Bipasha feels lucky because her parents think that the best thing that has happened to them is "three beautiful, individual, different kinds of girls they have".

"And the kind of freedom my parents give to me, I really feel that people should realise the value of a child, irrespective of the sex," she added.

Vidya has also been using her star status to drive change. She recently unveiled a giant abacus in Lusa village in Uttar Pradesh, urging women to study.

Ajay Devgn, who has a daughter and a son, has teamed with actress wife Kajol for a short film on female foeticide.

Ajay fights the allegation that actors have a personal motive for backing social causes. "The film on female foeticide is not for commercial purposes. It is to create awareness. I think it's our responsibility to do something that will create awareness about the issue of girl child and female foeticide," Ajay told us.

Filmmakers are equally geared up.

'Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid' and 'Riwayat' are two recent films that have attempted to delve into the aftermath of practices such as female foeticide.

'Riwayat', a production by two NRI doctors from Australia, boasts of no big names. At the heart of the film is the emotional journey of three women from different walks of life and their trysts with foeticide.

National Award-winning filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda's 'Jalpari: The Desert Maid' has Tannishtha Chatterjee and Parvin Dabbas playing key roles.

Tannishtha said: "When I read the script, I thought being a woman and an actress it is very important for me to support a film like this."

The mantle for social responsibility lay on just a few activist actors like Shabana Azmi, who recently held the third edition of her NGO Mijwan Welfare Society annual fashion show, supported by over 25 celebrities.

There are others to share it now, also believing in entertainment with responsibility.

There was a time when heroines like Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol and Juhi Chawla ruled the roost for a little over a decade before making a dignified exit.

“Your work isn’t over with just our conversation. You will have to think about it, put it together, write it. A lot of work goes behind the article that appears in a magazine.” With that, Rani Mukherjee turns the interview on its head. The point of that analogy being that not appearing on screen does not mean she has not been working. “I have been preparing for the upcoming roles. As an actor, one is constantly busy, even between shoots,” she says. Rani’s comparison-drawing was in response to my query on why she has made herself scarce, working only in a few films now. While the world might blame this on a lack of good roles, challenging scripts, successful films as also her preoccupation with her beau Aditya Chopra, she views it as a personal choice. “It’s the only way to work,” she says.

Until just a few years ago Rani shone, burned even, brightly at the top of the heroines’ heap and then turned rare in a quick blink as Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan stormed the Bollywood scene. Now, along with fellow veterans Manisha Koirala in Bhoot Returns and Preity Zinta in Ishq in Paris, Rani is striking back at the silver screen—with a vengeance—in Aiyya. The biggest homecoming, however, is superstar Sridevi’s return, in English Vinglish, after a gap of 15 long years (see box). That other former number one, Madhuri Dixit, continues to dance into couch potato hearts in the fifth season of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on Colors. And this is a resurgence not limited to just Bollywood. In Hyderabad, the gorgeous Amala Akkineni is back at the turnstiles with Life is Beautiful after staying away from the arclights for almost two decades. Bets are being taken on who will stage the next comeback. Aishwarya Rai? Perhaps.



Comeback may be the unifying term, but the nuances of the individual journeys vary. Marriage and family kept Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Sridevi, Amala, Madhuri, Manisha and Neetu Singh away, but for Preity the hiatus has also been attributed to her growing involvement with the IPL and the business of cricket. For Tabu and Rani, though, it has been about doing something substantial and not just anything. What is heartening is that while they may have been out of sight, they weren’t entirely out of mind. Ormax Media’s survey of the top 20 actresses for the month of August has turned up quite a few surprises. Four of the top 10 heroines on the list, Aishwarya, Kajol, Madhuri and Rani, are not thought as being ‘active’.

But this nostalgia tugs at the heartstrings without quite sending the cash registers ringing. Audiences may seem to prefer a Madhuri or Kajol over a Sonakshi, Anushka, Genelia or Asin, but it has not been easy for these ladies to reinvent and still remain relevant and stay in the reckoning at the box office. Attempts at a career revival have as a rule not been successful. Case in point, the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia, who left Bollywood behind at 16 after her debut in Bobby and couldn’t immediately deliver success on her comeback in Saagar. “This when she was still young. She was just in her 20s when she came back,” veteran film journalist Rauf Ahmed says. Then there have been the execrable returns: Raveena in Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap, Karisma’s Dangerous Ishq or doubtless Preity’s forthcoming film.

But it’s not the stars who are at fault. “The story has to have appeal. You have to give a good film for viewers to enjoy,” says Gauri Shinde, who is directing Sridevi in English Vinglish. “Problems happen when you try and fit (yourself) to the demands of the mainstream cinema,” says Shailesh Kapoor, CEO, Ormax Media. While the limelight is not kind to mature actors, it is even less forgiving of its aging leading ladies. Men face the reinvention dilemma and compulsions to adapt in their early 50s—just ask Sunny Deol or Sanjay Dutt. Heck, even Amitabh. With women, though, alarm bells could ring in their early 30s. Ours is no Hollywood, where a Meryl Streep can continue to hold sway—the wrinkles and age spots intact. Roles with substance are ever harder to come by. Filmmaker Onir who helmed Juhi Chawla’s post-hiatus relaunch, I Am, suggests that there ought to be more movies with roles for veteran actresses. “There is a lot of hunger in these actresses but not many are being offered what they deserve,” he says. Juhi is the rare star who is comfortable playing her age. And that poise and dignity comes from not being trapped in that old rat race. “The pressure and insecurity isn’t there, she does what makes her happy,” says Onir. Sachin Kundalkar, who directed Aiyya, has a similar opinion of Rani. “She has seen and done everything now. There’s no sense of competition, but a lot of security,” he says.



The choice between working with a new director or old, Bollywood insider or Marathi or Tamil auteur then ceases to matter. A film centred on them or one with a good script is the all. So Neetu Singh took a break from domesticity to work in Habib Faisal’s debut Do Dooni Chaar. And Sridevi returns under the helm of a Bollywood newcomer, as does Rani. “The director has to bring something different to the table for me. Sachin Kundalkar seems to have a new take on me, sees me differently,” says Rani. Her Marathi mulgi falls in love with a man (Malayalam actor Prithviraj) because he smells good. Amala is a working single mother in Life Is Beautiful, while Sridevi is a mom trying to overcome her lack of English skills. “It’s a very relateable film about our insecurities and lack of confidence. How small things can become big issues,” says Gauri.

But how does it feel to switch on after being off for a while? There have been many changes in the years Sridevi has been away, says Gauri. There are new shooting styles, sync sound, video assist among others. “But once an actor, always an actor. She is even better now,” she adds. The audiences, though, will be the judge of that. Will fans look past the sell-by date and give English Vinglish a thumbs up?

Youths turn eco-idol crusaders

MUMBAI: In order to encourage youngsters to spearhead the campaign for an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav, the Times Green Ganesh (TGG) Ambassador programme was launched recently at the Sophia College festival, Kaleidoscope 2012.

Each TGG Ambassador will spread the word in his locality and request Ganesh mandals, households and societies to undertake eco-friendly actions. A major campaign is being undertaken to sensitize youth about the adverse effects of pollution and environment-related offences.

TGG has also tied up with the National Social Service (NSS) for an outreach programme. Around 1,200 students from 20 colleges in Maharashtra have attended workshops and participated in this campaign. An idol-making workshop was conducted recently by Anita Rane-Kothare, head of department of Ancient Indian Culture, St Xavier's College in association with the Museum Society of Bombay, where children from the Spastics Society, Indian Cancer Society, RTT School and Bhavishyayaan participated.

Similarly workshops have been conducted at SIWS College Wadala, KC College and HR College. Professors from the Sir JJ School of Art (sculpture), NGO Envirovigil led by Prof Vidyadhar Walavalkar, Dr Anuradha Natarajan and KC College principal Manju Nichani have supported this cause. The campaign is also organized in Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Kolhapur.

Shaina NC of I Love Mumbai Foundation set to organize a workshop at Lala Lajpatrai College on September 18, which will be attended by actress Kajol.

Actress Kajol wants everyone to celebrate a clean and eco-friendly Ganesh festival, which kickstarted Wednesday.

"Please, all of you, go ahead celebrate an eco-friendly Ganpati and make sure that whatever happens, at the end of the day you are there to clean up and to make sure that you don't litter the city more than you already have," the 38-year-old said here.

About her own celebration this Ganpati, Kajol said: "I think welcoming Ganpati begins from the heart and I feel god is around us 24 hours, 365 days of the year. I believe in that more than just keeping a special day for Ganpati."

The Ganpati festival is full of life in Mumbai, and several Bollywood celebrities celebrate it with fanfare.

Over the past week, over 300,000 big and small idols started arriving in the city from artists' studios in different parts of Mumbai and Raigad.

Our exhibitor friend tells us that the guys at Dharma Productions have come up with a foolproof plan to ensure that the film gets a huge opening. They have used Shahrukh Khan and Kajol as bait to bring in the audiences. We all know that the legendary Raj and Simran will make cameo appearances in this campus caper, but let us tell you where this will happen. We heard from our secret source that we usually trust with our fingers crossed.

King Khan will be featured in the Vela ho ja re song and Kajol will be seen shaking a leg with the kids in the Disco deewane number. With this bit of info, betcha you just can’t wait to watch SOTY!

It is Karan Johar’s big secret, but we might as well bring it out. Karan’s campus romance, ‘Student Of The Year’, with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra, is all set to release soon and we hear the bookings are going on in full force. As is typical of Karan Johar films, there are some surprises in store here too. The film has Johar’s favourites, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol grooving but unfortunately to different songs. King Khan apparently appears in the ‘Vela Ho Ja’ song, while Kajol will be seen dancing with the boys in the ‘Disco Deewane’ number. We are surprised why Karan didn’t get them together in one single song. Perhaps he has as a surprise to his fans!

We hear that Karan managed to get the distributors highly interested in the film, because of the presence of these two stars. It may be recalled that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol made a super hit pair till Kajol decided to get married to Ajay Devgn and settled into matrimony. The duo has done many films together and the audience has lapped up each of these films, with a lot of enthusiasm. There have been stories making the rounds that the two will come together in a Johar film, but none of that has worked out. The last time the two were seen together was in ‘My Name Is Khan’.

At the Vogue beauty awards, Kajol wore a stunning champagne coloured strapless Ayesha Depala gown with a train. She kept her hair up, eyes and accessories tasteful, making quite a style statement.
All that being said, Kajol always looks sexy in saris! Remember that scene in KKHH when the pallu of her sari flies when Shahrukh Khan is looking at her? That’s how we love Kajol!

Ajay and Kajol Devgn has become a jet-setting couple. On Saturday morning they flew into Jodhpur to attend the marriage of Rishika Lulla to investment banker Swaneet and flew back in the evening to attend an event in Mumbai.

Says a source present at the wedding of Rishika, daughter of Kishore and Manju Lulla Day, “Many celebrities from Bollywood attended the wedding, including Arjun Rampal, Arjun Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kunder, Karan Johar, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D Souza. Priyanka Chopra came to Jodhpur to attend the wedding ceremony held at Umaid Bhawan and also performed at the reception held there the next day wearing an off white lehnga with pink and orange embellishments, designed by Manish Malhotra. The three-day marriage celebrations that started on September 27th and included sangeet, mehendi and cultural events held at the Mehrangarh Fort, ended with the wedding on September 29 – the Anand Karaj ceremony at a gurudwara as Swaneet is from the Sikh community. Ajay and Kajol attended the Anand Karaj ceremony before flying back the next day to Mumbai.”

The reception was held at the Umaid Bhawan the next day. The sangeet was a fun affair with Mika performing and all the other guests including Karan Johar and Sridevi, taking to the dance floor after that. Manish Malhotra designed the entire Lulla family’s wardrobe for the sangeet which included Kishore, his wife Manju, his brother Sunil, his wife Krishika, Rishika, Swaneet and Rridhina’s outfits. Manish also designed Ritiesh Deshmukh, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty outfits for the reception.
